Description Dan Dascalescu 2023-04-11 04:34:18 UTC
I'd like to make a usability suggestion inspired from Flameshot. I believe this would great improve the ergonomics of Spectacle, and help make Spectacle superior to Flameshot, thanks to the annotation library which allows more powerful capabilities not present in Flameshot (eg. moving objects around).

Most of the times I take a screenshot, I want to annotate it. It would be great to add "Annotate" among the options under Configure -> General -> After taking a screenshot. Right now, if I want to annotate, I have to press Enter, click the Spectacle popup notification (this requires not copying the image to the clipboard after taking the screenshot - see bug 468369), choose Annotate, make my annotation, click Annotation done, then Copy image to clipboard.

JFYI in the upcoming 23.04 release, you can annotate immediately when using Rectangular Region mode.

The suggestion makes sense anyway though, since when using a different mode, the result is a screenshot in the main window and you have to manually show the annotation tools.

Perhaps we could even remove the separate "annotations mode" and just always have the annotation toolbar visible in the main window. This would also let us remove a button from the toolbar

Having enjoyed the usability of Flameshot in this regard, I support this idea.

Do you feel this is still necessary with the current version of spectacle?

With the better-integrated annotations editor built into the Rectangular Region mode, personally I don't feel as much need for this anymore. Dan might feel differently of course.
