SUMMARY widevineCDM Plugin in Firefox (preinstalled) keeps crashing. (seems to be mainly KDE Neon going by quick Reddit search: https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/zogp86/widevinecdm_crashing_constantly_on_linux/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/zogq19/firefox_widevinecdm_crashing_constantly/ https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/111s42y/comment/j8k355q/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 ) STEPS TO REPRODUCE Install KDE Neon user edition and open Netflix, Amazon Prime, TIDAL or almost any other paid media streaming service. Try to play Media. OBSERVED RESULT It will crash. (where do I get the crash info? on Redit someone said it was empty.) EXPECTED RESULT Media is played SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Operating System: KDE neon 5.27 KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.1 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.103.0 Qt Version: 5.15.8 Kernel Version: 6.1.0-1007-oem (64-bit) but also default 5.15 and 5.19 Graphics Platform: Wayland Firefox: at least 109-111 Processors: 16 × 12th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-1240P Memory: 15,3 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® Graphics Manufacturer: Framework ADDITIONAL INFORMATION I also saw that Hardware decoding was disabled. This makes my fans spin up to max while only watching youtube. The snap package manages everything well. I think Hardware rendering is why some people on Reddit say flatpak is much faster. In my case Flatpak hat some Tearing-Issues. (Sorry if this is the wrong place for the report. But it seems like the issue is some configuration problem in this package and mainly in KDE Neon)
I made a script file to fix this issue. https://github.com/Kylar514/KDE-Neon-Firefox-widevine-fix
Thank you for your bug report! However this bug report was created/provided previous to 01/01/2023 and also has not received any updates since before 01/01/2025. Unfortunately KDE neon no longer provides updates for anything older than noble 24.04 based edition's. Please upgrade to KDE neon noble and if you can reproduce the issue after upgrading to an active version, feel free to re-open this bug report. Thanks for understanding!
