Just an example image I would like to use

SUMMARY
Try using a webp image for a background. It doesn't show up as a usable wallpaper

We support WEBP files for the wallpaper, and when I apply that image as my wallpaper it looks fine to me. Can you describe what goes wrong when you try to do the same? Attaching a screenshot that shows the issue would be very helpful too.

Have you installed https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/qt5-imageformats/ ?
