SUMMARY There seems to be lag when playing flac files in 2 different scenarios, lag in this case meaning audio stuttering / very short pauses in playback. 1. when playing most flac files from network storage. 2. when playing very high quality flac files even from a nvme ssd STEPS TO REPRODUCE (variant 1): 1. Example for freely available flac files where this was observed is available at https://damnwhore.bandcamp.com/album/pure-salope 2. Load the music onto a smb NAS drive and add the volume into your fstab file in rw mode. 3. Add the folder to elisas music folders. 4. Play i.e. the first song of the album. 5. Observe audio stuttering STEPS TO REPRODUCE (variant 2, somewhat easier to reproduce, bigger download though): 1. A example for freely available music elisa struggled with, even on nvme ssds, is the nier automata soundtrack from archive.org (https://archive.org/details/nier-automata-original-soundtrack) 2. Add the song to an existing music folder 2. Play the first song and observe the audio stuttering OBSERVED RESULT the audio hangs and stutters at somewhat random intervals EXPECTED RESULT Audio playback without stuttering, possible as shown for example in amberol or g4music players. SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Kernel version: 6.2.1-arch1-1 (64-bit) (available in About System) KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.2 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.103.0 Qt Version: 5.15.8 Storage: Samsung SSD 980 (on nvme0) File System (SSD, main drive): btrfs NAS: My Cloud Ex2 Ultra ADDITIONAL INFORMATION It is generally unlikely that this is a hard drive or connection speed issue only, as each songs only takes seconds to transfer between drives and any other programs work flawlessly, although the issue does exist in some other music players (VLC for example). It also sometimes takes ~30-40s for the issue to appear at all, depending on the specific song, but it then stutters every ~4-5s. This maybe be a issue with transfer speed consistency, but I have no idea what could be causing that.
