STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Opened file, working properly the previous day
2. Added reference images
3. File wouldn't update with painting or any other action

OBSERVED RESULT
Display didn't update, but work was updated on layer docker thumbnails

EXPECTED RESULT
My painting would continue to update as I paint and change layers, and it didn't.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Windows:
macOS:
Linux/KDE Plasma: Krita v 5.1.0, then updated to 5.1.5 with same results. Using appimage for both version. Running Linux Mint 20.3 Cinnamon
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version:
KDE Frameworks Version:
Qt Version:

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I was able to copy/paste layers into a new file and it worked perfectly.

So I understand this happens with one specific file? Could you attach the file to the bug report?

Thanks! I've downloaded the file. I know what's up: it looks like you copied the canvas and then pasted it as a reference image over the canvas, so it looks like the image but cannot be painted on. Try to select the reference image tool: you'll see the reference tool handles appear.
