Description Barry Jackson 2023-02-21 10:25:51 UTC
In a clean fresh installation the Systemsettings -> Audio -> Notifications volume level is 0% so new users hear no start - up sound or other notification sounds.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install a clean Mageia 9 Plasma system
2. Reboot
3.

OBSERVED RESULT
No start-up sound is heard
SystemSettings -> Audio -> Notification Sounds is set to 0%

EXPECTED RESULT
Initial default setting should be 50% and system sounds sounds should be audible by default.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Mageia 9 Kernel 6.1.12 Desktop
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version: 5.26.90
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.102.0

This bug is about the default level being set as 0% which makes audio notifications inaudible in new installations.
This is not what https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=425974 is about.

Weird, seems like the opposite problem from what's reported in Bug 425974. In that bug, it's 0% but plays anyway. In this one, it's 0% but doesn't play.

So it seems like right now for you, the setting is being honored, but the setting's initial value is bad.
Comment 4 Barry Jackson 2023-02-22 22:30:23 UTC
Yes exactly.
I have been testing lots of new Mageia 9 installations (which has just gone into version freeze). Always as installed we have no sound notifications and the setting is always 0%. Increasing it fixes the problem. This is bad for new users who will probably never realize that the sounds even exist unless they go poking through sytemsettings, which many will never do.

Bug in pulseaudio I suppose. We don't initialize the notification stream so we have no control over its initial volume.
