SUMMARY I don't use the split view often, but when I do I only enable it temporarily. Because of this, I see the left pane as the "fixed" pane and the right pane as the "temporary" pane. This is because the animation shows a new pane appearing from the right. I always get tripped up because I expect the Close button to close the "temporary" pane. Currently, the pane that actually gets closed is dependent on which pane is active. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Open a split view 2. Click the right-hand pane 3. Close the split view 4. Open a split view 5. Click the left-hand pane 6. Close the split view OBSERVED RESULT First the left-hand pane disappears, and then the right-hand pane disappears (depending on Dolphin's current settings). EXPECTED RESULT If a settings option such as "Turning off split view closes right-hand pane" existed, then I would expect the right-hand pane to always disappear. For context, currently we have a setting to determine which pane to close, the active (aka selected) one or the not activated one.
I'd like this too. The current options are too confusing for older, less mentally agile users such as myself. The current design
The current design requires tracking which pane is in focus, which I can never remember, and is difficult to tell at a glance, as they are both so similar. One side has bold text and has very lightly shaded alternating rows. There is an fairly arbitrary change in the icon. I can't tell which side it's instructing me will close if I click it. I see the scroll bar changes colour too, but I don't register it. Che current design makes me have to think about what is going to happen when I hit the close button. It's adding uncertainty and the chance of closing the wrong view in moments of cognitive stress.

Is it legible to you ? I feel a setting as you suggest would make sense, we'd have in settings, something like: Clicking on close Split view: ( ) Close the focus one ( ) Close the unfocused one ( ) Close the right one
hi, yes your proposal looks great. you know, now I'm used to it, I can cope with the current behaviour, so it's possible to learn it. And now I know it, I can see the little icon change and think it's actually very nicely done. But I'd prefer to set it to the right hand one. I actually generally have all toolbars hidden, as I'm generally on a small screen and need the space. I noticed that when the icons are set to display text only, then the button changes to just "Close", rather than "Close Left" or "Close Right". cheers
