***
A way to select the values for the axes included in a variable font.

This could maybe be achieved by adding a custom font style to variable fonts, where the user can manually change the axes with sliders.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open font selector
2. Select a variable font

OBSERVED RESULT
No method of changing the axes included in the font

EXPECTED RESULT
A method to change the axes included in the font

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: NixOs-unstable
(available in About System)

KDE Frameworks Version: 5.102.0
Qt Version: 5.15.8

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Comment 1 Nate Graham 2023-01-24 18:21:21 UTC
This is something super specialized that seems out of scope for most normal people's usage of the system. Can you comment on your use case that requires this feature?
Comment 2 Nagy Tibor 2023-01-24 19:13:48 UTC
This is not super specialized, it's about properly supporting OpenType 1.8+. I also miss variable font support from KDE stuff.
Comment 3 Nate Graham 2023-01-24 19:15:53 UTC
I'm not very familiar with that; can you explain what "properly supporting OpenType 1.8+" means? What good thing happens if we implement this, and what bad thing happens or what's missing if we don't?
Comment 4 Johannes Joens 2023-01-24 20:27:49 UTC
I mainly want to use the width axis that many variable fonts have to make the text more condensed. But it has many more uses like changing the slant, weight and Optical Size to a more fine grain precisions than just light, regular, and bold style selector has. There are also some fonts that have custom axes that can change all sorts of other stuff about the font.
