Description Marco Parillo 2022-12-23 22:17:40 UTC
SUMMARY
***
Should Network Manager prefer wired over Wi-Fi?
***

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Plug in Ethernet Cable, Boot Computer with known Wi-Fi
2. Hover over the Network Manager wired icon in my tray

OBSERVED RESULT

It says that I am connected to BOTH:

- Wired Ethernet: Connected to Wired connection 1
- Wi-FI: Connected to <ssid>

Double-checking, I go to System Settings > Connections, and see both Wired Ethernet and Wi-Fi show connected there also.

EXPECTED RESULT

I would have expected the wired connection to take precedence, but maybe this is working as designed?

In the #kubuntu IRC channel, I was told that this is the expected behavior. So it is clearly not a bug. Could it be a wishlist instead to prefer wired over Wi-Fi?

>It says that I am connected to BOTH:

That is expected. You can have multiple subnets, different IPs and all sorts of combinations.

We don't know there's an issue to fix yet.

I imagine NetworkManager does something sane. "route" in a terminal will show you which interface it prefers for "default". If that's not the expected one, we can look at what options NetworkManager provides that we can surface.

Note you do have the "autoconnect-priority" available in the settings, though I suspect that's not entirely relevant here.
