Description dentex 2022-12-08 11:14:40 UTC
SUMMARY
kdenlive crashes after a few clicks on the clips in the timeline (if I added any video effect to them)

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. import some clips to the timeline
2. Apply a video effect to them (which to seems be indifferent)
3. Click a few time back and forth on the clips, move the play head, click again...
4. In a matter of a few clicks, the app crashes invariably

OBSERVED RESULT
Freeze and crash

EXPECTED RESULT
I expect to be able to jump easily between clips selections...

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Kdenlive: 22.08.3
Package Type: appimage
MLT: 7.10.0
Qt: 5.15.5 (built against 5.15.5 x86_64-little_endian-lp64)
Frameworks: 5.98.0
System: Linux Mint 21
Kernel: linux 5.15.0-53-generic
CPU: x86_64
Windowing System: xcb
Movit (GPU): disabled
Track Compositing: frei0r.cairoblend

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
It seems that moving the playhead away from the clip I want to click on, might save the app from crashing... the problem is that while I'm editing, I cannot remember this all the times and I have to reload the appimage and the project every 5 minutes.

It's possible that the issue arises when the effect used it's "exposure".
Comment 2 erjiang 2023-01-02 06:21:47 UTC
I was not able to get Kdenlive to crash using the 22.08.3 AppImage on Ubuntu 22.04.1, including when using the Exposure effect. However, we do know a lot of other crashes were fixed between 22.08 and 22.12. Could you try a newer version of the AppImage, like 22.12.0, and see if it still crashes for you?

I didn't notice v22.12.0. I'm downloading it now and then I'll let you know.

The crash log unfortunately doesn’t have a backtrace. One option is to compile kdenlive yourself to get an updated version with debugging symbols. Another is to send me your project, if it is something you can share. Do you know if this is a problem limited to a particular machine or a particular project file?
Comment 8 dentex 2023-01-18 12:30:07 UTC
Yes it happens with any project on my machine. I can check with another laptop I have, again with Linux Mint. So I don't think sharing any project might make sense (although I could, no secrets; just fpv drone videos). I can also try building kdenlive. So now at least I have a couple of things to try. ☺️

gdb log after reproducing the bug in kdenlive 2022.12.2

I am also having the same issue with Kdenlive on my linux mint 21.1 (cinnamon) machine.
Here is some info I gathered:

First, when it all began, I had linux mint 20.3 (cinnamon). I tested the crashes on two other Linux mint 20.3 (cinnamon) machines and both ran smoothly. Then I tried to get the bug on the affected machine but with a different desktop environment. I installed KDE Plasma; followed the steps to reproduce the bug and nothing happened; the crash was absent. Seems like it only happens when I run kdenlive on cinnamon.

Then I tried upgrading to Linux mint 21; it didn't solve the crashes.
Then when I was trying to make a gdb log with backtrace, I also accidentally managed to get kdenlive working without crashes by running it with sudo.
But still, this isn't the correct behavior so here is the log

I confirm that running with sudo doesn't crash... Unfortunately it's the only additional test I've been able to do yet.

I just tried the latest experimental build available:

>> kdenlive-master-524-linux-gcc-x86_64.AppImage	16-mar-2023 17.45.04

unfortunately same crashing behavior.
Comment 12 idglushko 2023-03-21 07:14:08 UTC
I forgot to mention, but the crash also occurs with audio tracks and any kind of effects (gain, fade, etc.).

I tried explaining the whole situation on the Kdenlive Telegram channel and was pointed to a Linux Mint forum, since the issue seems to originate from Cinnamon. So here is the post I made. Hopefully, someone will help.
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2308993#p2308993

If it can't be solved there, I guess I'll ask on github. If it doesn't help either, well, then we've got a problem. As a last resort, the most secure and optimal way that I can think of to use Kdenlive would be to run the .exe version through wine.
