Description JanNowak94 2022-10-19 17:33:38 UTC
Open Containing Folder - translated as: "Otwórz jego katalog"

This happens in:
kid3/kid3_qt.po trunk
kio/kio5.po trunk
spectacle/spectacle.po stable/trunk (I assume as source - as it makes sense only for this one)

ISSUE:
"Open Containing Folder" - cannot be translated directly.
zawierać (to contain) as verb needs a object.
And participle is used same way - otherwise it leads to extremely weird/incorrect phrase.
It would need to be extended - "Open folder containing [this] file" - "Otwórz katalog zawierający [ten] plik"; "Open folder containing [this] folder" - "Otwórz katalog zawierający [ten] katalog" (Which is mouthful).

The person who translated spectacle probably understood this and created this weird fix:
"Open his/it's folder" - "zrzut ekranu" (screenshot) is the 'it' then sentence "Otwórz jego katalog" can be interpreted as in open it's (screenshot's) folder.
This wasn't intended to be copied but people did copy the phrase which did not end well.

Now we have kio5 and kid3_qt
Both translated as spectacle above which does not make sense - what is the "it's"?

SOLUTION
Because of how location of file is referred in the properties - "Otwórz położenie " + "pliku"/"katalogu" - open the location "of the file"/"of the folder".

Unless you are willing to use neologisms like "nadkatalog" then "location" solution will be simplest phrase.
"Otwórz nadkatalog" - open the above-folder - "podkatalog" (under-folder) is 'subdirectory' in Polish.

Second solution:
Or at least "Otwórz katalog nadrzędny" (open parent directory) . - This is correct but also bit confusing because some people use "katalog nadrzędny" as root directory by extension of fact that the root is parent to all directories (even tough the proper term for root directory is "katalog główny"). It is certainly less confusing than "it's" .

Additionally it's really confusing when in file picker you click on active directory and then on that option again and again - expecting open THIS directory (in file manager) every single time - unless you remember that isn't the "it's" intention here.
