SUMMARY
hello,
This is just a feature request.
Basically it would be very good for new starters to have an option on systemsettings to setup easily a basic desktop style. The user could choose from a list of styles.

Common styles that I can remember are:
Current KDE default style(window7) the panel at the bottom.
Gnome mac style, floating panel at the bottom. Another panel at the top with notifications etc.
Classic gnome. A panel at the top.
Unity, a panel at the left.

That would help users, specially when we do fresh install.

regards,
Galder

We've considered this idea in the past, and I even implemented a proof-of-concept. See https://phabricator.kde.org/D24223

Ultimately we decided against it. Sere the last comment in there. I've also written this up at https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Design/Lessons_Learned#Global_Themes_to_mimic_other_platforms.

Hi Nate,
it is a shame that finally this idea was rejected because having 3 layout
styles with generic names doesn't harm anyone. I will just help the users
and I don't think it would create any extra expectations.

Anyway, thanks for all your hard work leading KDE and congratulations for
your nomination!

I'll see you on any random ticket :)

Comment 3 Nate Graham 2022-10-20 16:31:56 UTC
You're welcome!

If all we want to do is make it simple for people to relocate their panel and turn on floating mode, I think using Global Themes for that is overkill, and this hints at panel configuration not being simple enough. IMO we should fix that directly.
Comment 4 galder 2022-10-20 16:43:41 UTC
Yes that would be perfect. Just some default presets to move the panels.
I hope in some point you can revisit this idea.
it would make a difference in the DEs.

Thanks for your understanding.
