kscreen-kwin black screen with HDMI

SUMMARY

Sometimes when connecting an external monitor or TV via HDMI I get a black screen where only cursor is visible (and it's changing as if it's really hovering over different UI elements!)

Today it's consistent. Every time I plug in HDMI cable, the screen turns black like that. But when I disconnect it, everything returns to normal — except windows' geometries: they mostly become when thin vertically.

I collected journal logs with KWin debugging enabled.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Connect HDMI cable.
2. Feel despair.
3. Disconnect HDMI cable.

OBSERVED RESULT
Black screen when connected, messed up window layout after disconnection.

EXPECTED RESULT
Second monitor is connected as normal.

Does https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-workspace/-/merge_requests/2125 partially fix the bug? Will a panel show up after applying the patch?
Comment 3 Nate Graham 2022-09-22 17:10:43 UTC
Can you try again today? Some other NVIDIA fixes landed yesterday too.

Is this a regression?
Comment 4 ratijas 2022-10-01 19:30:38 UTC
It didn't get better, and in fact it happened again with DisplayPort too.

Hi, i also thought i have this bug but noo, if you see mouse, you see it on extended monitor.
Go to monitor settings and make them duplicate if you want them both to show the same thing.
Mouse seeing means its working and your background is black (dark mode) picture.

Ivan, did the big multiscreen refactor (that you worked on! :) ) fix this?
