We want to communicate to people that Plasma is flexible, modular, and made up of individual component pieces that can be configured, replaced with others, or removed.

A good question for VDG folks! Maybe somehow use the "puzzle piece" motif to communicate the idea of a larger whole being made of smaller pieces?
We pretty much have this now on the "Simple by Default" page, which mentions that things are widgets and also describes the panel as a container for widgets whose contents you can modify.
