Description cyslider 2022-08-20 11:52:11 UTC
It would be great if there was an option:

"Temporarily disable automatic sleep until next manual sleep"

Extra points if this becomes a widget for the task bar

Rationale:

I use my private pc for work a lot now, as many others. And often I have tasks running, especially SSH connections, that shouldn't be interrupted by "going to sleep"

So I turn of "auto sleep after X minutes" and then forget to turn it back on when this task is over.
When I notice that the PC is still running I often just press the sleep button on by keyboard manually. Over and over, not wanting to spare the time to log in and go to settings.

To make matters worse, something tends to wake up the PC at night and it does not go to sleep afterwards, drawing power the whole night.

So such a feature would save me a lot of power and since it is in my bedroom, also improve my nights a lot.

Hmm, interesting use case. I have perhaps a counter-proposal: how about we add an option for the "manually block sleep and screen locking" feature to let it time out after some period of time. We already have this for notifications' Do Not Disturb mode, so I think it would be quite natural. What do you think?
Comment 2 cyslider 2022-08-23 12:51:53 UTC
If I still can lock the screen, and maybe the timeout is configurable, this would be a good alternative, yes.
Comment 3 David Edmundson 2022-08-23 13:25:26 UTC
One can already inhibit auto-sleep certain tasks:"kde-inhibit --power some-long-task-here"

Cool, yeah.

I believe it's a reasonable request, and could be easily implemented (copy-pasted) from Notifications.

We also need a new icon: a system-suspend.svg crossed with a red line, which is like notifications-disabled.svg for Notifications applet.
