When using Non-Destructive Editing and Versioning, there should be an option to choose that the latest version of an image always has the original name.  And the older versions should also get the file flag hidden. 
So, in this case, the original image is e.g., file.jpg. When a new version is created, file.jpg is moved to file01.jpg, and the new, edited one keeps the original name file.jpg. file01.jpg is then the oldest version. And when you next edit it, file02.jpg is created as backup, and again the new, edited one is file.jpg.

No, I don't see it that way. A new version has an extension, not the original.
