SUMMARY I'm having two problems which might be similar. Sometimes the wayland desktop crashes. Those times all I get is these log entry in /var/log/messages: kwin_wayland[1494]: segfault at 1c1000000 ip 00000001c1000000 sp 00007ffe36539b08 error 14 in anon_inode:i915.gem[7fe062cff000+800000] I can recover by terminating the graphical session and starting a new one. Sometimes I also get a hard lockup. The system quickly stops responding; first some pieces of software, then the keyboard, and finally even the mouse. In that case, the only piece of the computer which is responding is the power button, which initiates an ordered shutdown; but the desktop does not close cleanly. Both crashes can lead to data loss, as one might think, so the severity of the bug should be at least "grave". I cannot yet find a way to reliably reproduce any of these behaviors, and they appear occassionally but frequently. Thanks for seeking a solution to this. SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Operating System: Slackware 15.0+ current (post 15.0) KDE Plasma Version: 5.25.3 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.96.0 Qt Version: 5.15.4 Kernel Version: 5.18.12 (64-bit) Graphics Platform: Wayland
We cannot do much without a backtrace. Please see if "coredumpctl dump kwin_wayland" has anything.
Thanks David. What you suggest is not possible since Slackware does not use systemd. Perhaps there is an equivalent tool? If that's te case, point it out to me and I'll try to use it.
Another crash. Closed all my apps and was left with a black screen. If I had any important data on any app, it would have been lost. KRunner was still responsive, so I invoked plasmashelll --replace. Requesting reopening of this bug. Today I again had a crash. The whole desktop crashed. This is still unfortunately inactionable without a backtrace.
(In reply to David Edmundson from comment #7) > This is still unfortunately inactionable without a backtrace. OK, but David, please tell me how can I have a backtrace? I'm just a desktop user.
Sorry, how can I give you a backtrace? Slackware does not use systemd and does not have any utility named 'coredumpctl'.
