Description Richard Knausenberger 2022-07-04 09:08:54 UTC
SUMMARY
***
When I update my Nvidia drivers (via apt/zypper/etc) the logout greeter crashes. To reboot, I have to use the terminal. After the reboot everything works again. It's just after an update of the Nvidia driver. It always happened to me after every Nvidia driver update, on Kubuntu 18.04, Kubuntu 20.04 and now on openSUSE Tumbleweed.
***

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Update your Nvidia drivers
2. Try to reboot/shutdown/logout/...

OBSERVED RESULT
The logout greeter crashes.

EXPECTED RESULT
The logout greeter works as normal.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Happened to all Nvidia updates on all Linux distros with KDE Plasma I used so far.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Never happened without a Nvidia driver update. Never happened with other desktop environments (like Cinnamon).
Found this old closed bug report https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=364593 with a similar issue. Might be relevant.

Normally I'd tell you that you have to reboot after updating your NVIDIA drivers, but it seems like this is preventing you from doing just that! How perverse.

Can you attach a backtrace of the crash?

Sure! I will as soon as the next Nvidia update get's released.

Finally I got a Nvidia update what caused this issue again.

When I click on the report bug button, the KDE bug reporter tries to open a window but it immediately crashes.
Can I get the logs from somewhere else?
