SUMMARY

The Desktop Grid and Present Windows desktop effects are kwin tools I use a lot. After years of use they are ingrained into my workflow.

The transition into and out of these Window Management desktop effects prior to 5.25 was smooth as butter. It looked like some sort of zoom animation was used to transition to and from the active desktop to each specfic desktop effect. Both the speed and smoothness of this transition animation was great. It was easy on the eye.

With the redevelopment of these Window Management desktop effects in 5.25 the transitions into and out of them are now rough, jagged and anything but smooth. Overview desktop effect has this issue also.

They are jagged and rough enough to give me a headache after about 45 minutes of use. Desktop grid seems to be the worst of the group. It is more jagged than the others.

I use between 4 and 8 virtual desktops usually and have anywhere from 4-12 applications open at any one time, on average.

A restored 5.24.5 system I tested with 2-8 virtual desktops and 16 open applications was smooth transitioning in and out.

My current 5.25.1 system I tested with 2-4 virtual desktops and 4 open applications was very jagged transitioning in and out. Reducing the number of deskops and applications didn't improve smoothness.

Hopefully the cause of this regression can be found and a fix developed. Headaches kinda suck.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

From an active desktop open a Window Management desktop effect (desktop grid, present window or overview).

OBSERVED RESULT

Transition animation into the desktop effect is jagged, rough, jerky and not smooth. Particularly the desktop grid.

EXPECTED RESULT

Transition animation into the desktop effect should be smooth, like it was in 5.24.5.
