Description Dennis Nik 2022-06-01 11:08:04 UTC
SUMMARY

I am writing this feature request to ask whether or not the window resize effect will be brought back on X11. It was removed in the following commit:

https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/commit/81f9da17fd9f367883b1fca02c7eb3a3ebaa1c34

The commiter mentions that the removal had something to do with the feature being problematic on Wayland. On X11 this worked like a charm in my experience however, making a substantial difference in performance.

What kind of hardware do you have where performance is such an issue that this effect was better?

I have a ThinkPad X220. Sure, it is old, but it is far from a rare occurrence in the linux community these days.
The effect on resizing windows really is noticeable performance wise, especially on "heavier" apps like Intellij IDEA.

This was an intentional change that we don't intend to bring back.
