Description David 2022-05-21 20:08:26 UTC
SUMMARY
if I compress an HTML file, open the compressed file with arch, and then click the HTML inside it to preview it, it will not show anything. Previously, it used to pull up an interface that resembled konqueror when opening such files, but now it looks different and does not display antything for HTML files, just shows a blank page.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Generate some HTML file or download some from the internet.
2. Compress the HTML file into any ark-associated format.
3. Open the compressed file with ark.
4. Once ark shows what's inside the compressed file that was opened, click the HTML file there to preview it with ark.

OBSERVED RESULT
Shows a blank document.

EXPECTED RESULT
Should render the HTML correctly like it used to be when it was (I guess) using konqueror internally.

Try going into Settings --> Application --> File Associations
Search for .html there and change the top most application in the "Application Preference Order" page to Konqueror then try again

I already have HTML files associated with konqueror, but ark anyway uses a "WebEngine viewer component".

Yeah, I just made a zipped .html test file.
I'm not quite sure this is something I can solve (since I can't code to save my life)

Can you try right clicking the .html file --> open with --> and ticking the "remember application preference" --> and selecting konqueror

See if that resolves the issue

Doesn't solve the issue.

Can you please attach a test archive that triggers this issue?

Happens with every single HTML file.

Well, I can't reproduce it then.

It would also help a screenshot of what you are seeing.

Here's a screenshot of the empty preview that I see. The HTML for reference is this:
https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/MatrixExtra/vignettes/Introducing_MatrixExtra.html

And the compressed file can be downloaded from here:

FWIW, I have been experiencing this behaviour of a blank window (i.e., white background, no visible text) when trying to preview XML files for some time. Deciding I wanted to fix it, searching turned up this report.

On a whim, I tried switching from Breeze Dark to Breeze Light. After that, the Preview option brought up a readable window of black text on white background. *Except* it now put me into Kate to see it, *not* via Ark's internal Preview window.

And when I switched from Breeze Light back to Breeze Dark, that same behaviour - the Preview option opening up the XML in Kate - continued albeit now as white text on dark background.

This is with the current Debian Trixie using Wayland-based KDE6. I don't recall what I was running when the behaviour reported here first happened to me.

Hope this extra "data point" helps.

Hmmm, a few hours later, and tried the switch again between Breeze Dark and Breeze Light, and now the Preview screen is used both ways. And is white background with no text both ways.

(I was careful *both* this time *and* before to ensure I was clicking on "Preview" and not "Open in External Application" on the screen. Did it several times each time to reassure myself of the behaviour I was seeing.)

KDE's Info Centre reports the following:

- Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux 12
- KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.2
- KDE Frameworks Version: 6.11.0
- Qt Version: 6.8.2
- Kernel Version: 6.12.19-amd64 (64-bit)

- Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon RX 6600

Another data point: Kate's Print Preview displays a blank, white page when using the Breeze Dark theme. It displays with black text on white background when using Breeze Light theme.
