Description David Chmelik 2022-05-19 04:24:19 UTC
SUMMARY
Classic application launcher is described (in panel widget adder) as cascading, but no longer is. If a submenu is longer than screen, it'd 'cascade' to continue the list to a new box to side of the first list box. Now it doesn't cascade but forces you to scroll down, which forces mouse wheel usage and often takes much longer.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Use application launcher.
2. Open submenu that goes off screen.
3. Doesn't cascade.

OBSERVED RESULT
Application launcher doesn't cascade.

EXPECTED RESULT
Cascading application launcher or option to return to old style.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Slackware64 15.1-current / 5.24.5
KDE Plasma Version: 5.24.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.94.0
Qt Version: 5.15.3

Can you attach a screenshot of the widget you're using so I can be sure we're on the same page?

Also, are you using X11 or Wayland?
Comment 2 David Chmelik 2022-05-19 20:59:39 UTC
X11. I guess I could use <PrtScn> to screenshot, but that version doesn't respect the choice to use the active window, rather screenshotting all monitors, so I'd have a lot of editing to do, and I'm using XFCE desktop environment now (much faster)... maybe I'll do it later.
Comment 3 Nate Graham 2022-05-23 14:22:55 UTC
I do need that screenshot to proceed.
Comment 4 David Chmelik 2022-05-23 19:37:18 UTC
<PRINTSCREEN> disappears menus, but should be very easy/quick to test.
Comment 5 Nate Graham 2022-05-24 15:55:26 UTC
I can't test it because I'm unsure what thing you're specifically talking about: Kicker? Kickoff? Old Kickoff? A 3rd-party launcher menu? Hence my request for a screenshot so I can know what it is.

Spectacle has a timer function that lets you schedule a screenshot several seconds in the future. You can use those seconds to open the menu in question.

Or you can take a picture with your phone.

I used exact term 'application launcher' in panel widget menu.

Logic errors. Again, I reported this when I was using KDE and want to switch back, and still use KDE software (family PC is fast enough for KDE, and I use KDE programs, just not KDE itself.)
Comment 8 David Chmelik 2022-05-24 22:43:20 UTC
You can see the menu is scrolled down past the end of everything starting with 'a' to standard preinstalled KDE stuff, but this style menu used to open another box to the right, or continue indefinitely, until your list was done, instead of forcing scroll (slower.)
Comment 9 Nate Graham 2022-05-25 14:49:53 UTC
Got it, thanks.

This is the intentional design. "Cascading" means that it's capable of opening sub-menus, not that each sub-menu extends horizontally rather than scrolling if its contents are taller than the screen height. So what you're seeing is the way it was designed.

other option
Comment 11 David Chmelik 2022-07-03 02:15:00 UTC
There was another option (shown in attachment) since Windows 9n (95, 98) & ME and a while after. I recall the shown menu style being an option for the start menu (so should be one for kicker, maybe kickoff, etc.)
Comment 12 Nate Graham 2022-07-05 15:20:54 UTC
Again, this is the intended design, sorry.
