Option to hide desktop icons by double-clicking on an empty area of the desktop.
When hidden, double clicking on an empty area makes the icons visible again.

We've gotten requests for this before, and I gather there's a Windows app that does this which some people have gotten used to. But I don't think it's a good idea at all to add this to Plasma itself as a 1st-party thing. People would enable it out of curiosity, forget they enabled it, and panic when they can't find their icons.

This is a good 3rd-party app/script opportunity, but I don't think it has a place in Plasma as an officially-supported 1st-party feature, sorry. :)

Yes, there are several applications for Windows that make this possible!
There is actually such an option for the Folder View widget in the KDE Store (https://store.kde.org/p/1490722), but not for the Plasma desktop itself.
Would it be possible to get the code for this option in Folder View and port it to the Plasma desktop?

The desktop uses Folder View too, so it should work there. The description text even says:

"You can use it both as a plasmoid, or as an alternative for the desktop (right click on the desktop, "configure desktop...", etc.)."
