You haven't attached an image. If you do this with a painted object on a transparent layer, the result may not be what you wanted. Try this with an image on a solidly painted background.

* I'm not clear on what you mean with the filter tab? There's a filter menu that contains six different emboss filters. Did you use one of these? Or did you use the Bevel and Emboss layer style?
