SUMMARY

Initial setup for importing photos (about 3,000) copied directory folders and some subfolders but did not load about the last half of the photos.  Trying to re-import from individual folders results in an error message about not being able to import from the same path

This error message is intentional and based on bug reports we have received. It makes no sense to import images from the collection path . digiKam will scan all the images in your collection, it will take some time on first launch, you will see the progress in the status bar.

Another explanation. digiKam does not copy images into the database, only selected metadata. Your images stay in the path where they are. If you wanted to import images from the collection path , it would overwrite the same images again. Until all the images in your collection are scanned on first launch, they will not appear in digiKam.
