I wanted to provide some additional information to KPPP bug #44834: I get the same problem as described but in my case "/var/log/syslog.ppp" a= nd "/var/log/syslog" do not exist. "/var/log/messages" does exist and is aw= fully long. The problem does not occur when I use KPPP as root. The access rights of /v= ar/log/ are drwxr----- and its owner is root group also root. I hope that helps best regards Matthias Hofmann ------=_NextPart_000_0008_01C22D1D.A05AC540 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Diso-8859-1" http-equiv=3DContent-Type> <META content=3D"MSHTML 5.00.3314.2100" name=3DGENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#d8d0c8> <DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>Hello!</FONT></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>I wanted to provide some additional inform= ation to=20 KPPP bug #44834:</FONT></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>I get the same problem as described but i= n my case=20 </FONT><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>"/var/log/syslog.ppp" and "/var/log/sysl= og" do=20 not exist. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0009_01C230E8.92F57160 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hello again I finally wanted to let you know that I apparently found an explanation and= also a solution for the problem: By changing the 'group' property of "/var= /log/messages" to a group that I belong to I gave KPPP a chance to access = the file and to generate a different error message from which I learned th= at I failed to authenticate; I then found out that I had entered the wrong = password for my ISP and when I entered the correct one it worked! Meanwhil= e I have changed the 'group' property back to 'root' and it still works. Just to put it in a nutshell: The whole problem only occurred because KPPP = was unable to access "/var/log/messages" in order to report the wrong passw= ord. Therefore there was no change for me to realize that the password was= actually the problem. I don=B4t know if there is a way for you developers to make this more appar= ent.
