A demonstration of the behaviour

SUMMARY
***
When playing the video preview, I can hear a crackling noise which makes Kdenlive basically unusable. I can't hear this in the original footage or the rendered video.
***

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Put any footage in the timeline, even if it doesn't have any audio
2. Press the play button under the video preview

OBSERVED RESULT
The video plays, but with a crackling noise

EXPECTED RESULT
The video plays and sounds the same as the original footage

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Windows: Windows 11 Home
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.88.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2
MLT Version: 7.3.0

Can you make a test? Goto settings -> configure Kdenlive -> playback -> change the audio backend to: Wasapi or WinMM or DirectSound and try again.

I've had this issue for so long but decided I'd look it up. This worked, thank you! At first I switched between all of them and that didn't fix it, but when I restarted kdenlive after switching it to DirectSound, then added the video files again there was no weird crackling noise. I previously had it set to Wasapi.

Also I'm new to this website so hope I'm sending this correctly.

Thank you for your feedback and contribution. Glad to hear it works. This is not really a Kdenlive bug more a driver issue.

I updated the handbook accordingly.

I close this bug. If it still appears in the latest version, please feel free to re-open it and update the affected version number.

I am using version 22.12.2 on Tumbleweed. The crackling has recently appeared usually after an edit. My audio settings are

Audio backend: SDL
Audio driver: Automatic
Audio device: default

Until now I had never even looked at them. If I try to change the driver to Pipewire, kdenlive crashes on start-up
Comment 5 farid 2023-03-06 12:33:46 UTC
I confirm this in latest master.

Can you please report whether the problem still exists? Or can we close the bug report?
