SUMMARY Gcompris audio say alphabet letter names instead of actual letter sound. Such kind of behavior confuse children and in moment when children start to read real text they try to read letters same way as they heard in gcomris. Due it need to spend extra time to study real sounds instead of letter names. As i understand real target of Gcompris to make children to study reading more friendly and easy way but instead of it children confused and learn wrong. For example 'S' sounds like 'es', 'L' sounds like 'el'. In russian 'С' sounds like ''эс', 'ж' sound 'жэ'. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Activate russian translation 2. Start and play game with alphabet where need to choose letters and gcompris say latter sound. OBSERVED RESULT Gcompris say letter name instead of sound . For example for russian litera 'Ж' gcompris say 'Же'. Litera 'L' - gcompris say 'EL'. EXPECTED RESULT It have to be actual letter sounds instead if letter names. Hi, I think you are talking about click_on_letter? The goal of the application is to recognize the letters by their name not to learn to read. I wish your proposition would be easy to do, but it is not, at least in french (I am ground school teacher). In french a single letter can sound totally differently according to where it is in a word. e can sound en é è and even nothing if it is at the end of the word. Yes you right. For some languages it will be hard to do . But for Russian it is quite easy. We have only 2 actual letters which does not have sound at all it is 'Ъ' and 'ь'. But for only two letters it is much easier to tell children how to read it instead of whole alphabet. Well i created such report at least to start a discussion notice what kind of issues appear. And to try to find good solution for as more as possible languages. To be realistic letter names usage in real world quite limited . In my mind i have only alphabet organized catalogues like phonebook and dictionaries. I not have any another real example where it used. So in my opinion real sounds is more important to know. But i am understand your point . May be somebody from community have suggestions.
Hi, thank you for the report and sorry for not answering sooner. I think both sounds make sense but there should be a specific activity to learn the sound of the letters. Here the activities are really about the letters: click on letter, missing letter... When it makes sense to have the sound of the letter, the word is spoken so we have the "good" sound of the letter for the word (which may vary depending on where the letter is in the word, which letters are around it...). So adding new activities like: "which sound(s) makes the letter", "find all the word where this sound is spoken" (which would be good for example to make the differentiation of the same letter with different sounds) would be more interesting for me than changing the actual ones
We do this type of activity everyday with pupils learning to read, and even before the age of 6 without reading, just asking if pupils hear the sound [a] or do not ear the sound [a] for example. This would be a great activity! One little difficulty I see here is, how good will be the translation teams for this kind of exercises. This is not anymore just a translation task but, they will need to do a real pedagogical work. We have the material to do it (see enrich your vocabulary), and the task is not difficult to program. We need to properly introduce these kind of activities (maybe via youtube videos) to the translation teams and explain how important it is to create the datasets properly and do real tests.
