It would be nice if we could do a quick one time change to the charging thresholds (for example, with a button in the battery and brightness applet next to the "your battery is configured to only charge up to x %."). The situation is the following. I guess most people that set up this thresholds is to try to extend battery life. For example, I connect my laptop every day to a docking station at work, so I have charge_control_start_threshold = 40% and charge_control_end_threshold = 80%. This way, I can always quickly unplug the laptop from the docking station and have enough battery to go to a meeting, work on the train, etc. (you get the idea). However, when I know I will need a 100% for whatever reason (a trip, for example), I need to go to System Settings -> Power Management -> Advanced Power Management and change the thresholds. After that, next time I also have to remember to go back to previous thresholds. My proposal is to add button that resets start and end thresholds to 0% and 100% only for one time.
Since going on a trip is a fairly rare occurrence, why isn't it enough to just change the threshold in the settings page? That's what I do when I go on a trip.
By trip I didn't necessary mean a long trip. So in my case (and probably other users as well), "going on a trip is a fairly rare occurrence" is not true, and I find myself changing the settings at least 2 or 3 times per week. Yes, of course, I can go to the settings and change it every time I need it, that's why I mark this as a wish and not a bug. But I usually forget to change it back, and I only realize after some unnecessary full charges.
OK, that seems reasonable.
I was thinking of something similar. I like to work away from a power outlet, e.g. in a garden. Doesn't have to be a once off. I want to tell my laptop I'm intending to switch from working continuously on a charger to a battery, and I'd like it to prepare for it, by charging the battery to the max (as configured). There could be another option telling what to do after the laptop is plugged again, it could switch to the standard charging thresholds - (battery longevity) or max charge, so I can go again away from the outlet as soon as possible. So in summary, we'd have two or three charging profiles: - battery longevity - max charge, once off (goes back to longevity once plugged) - max charge, continuous (doesn't switch to battery longevity)
