One more thing that I forgot to add, the issue still happens with the latest KDE Plasma (version 5.23.5)

Do you have a multi-screen setup? And when you say the wallpaper disappears, what do you mean exactly? Does the background turn black? If you right-click on the background (whatever it is) do you see a context menu?

> Do you have a multi-screen setup?

No, I use only one monitor.

> And when you say the wallpaper disappears, what do you mean exactly? Does the background turn black?

Yes, it turns to black.

> If you right-click on the background (whatever it is) do you see a context menu?

Yes, the context menu works fine.

Oh wow, so the wallpaper really did disappear. Sounds like your containments are fine, just the wallpaper is gone. That's odd.

Can you run this command and paste the output:

grep "Image=" ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc

Hmm, so it's there in some containment.

The image exists as it described in the config file, why doesn't it appear?
Also, after I change the wallpaper, there are 2 entries in the config file, and the new entry disappears after each reboot.

This happens to me as well. I have a multimonitor setup. Every reboot it's anyone's bet whether the "Darkest Hour" image will be restored (as set on each monitor), or whether the monitor will be entirely black.

Of some interest, when I launch "desktop folder settings -- Plasma" even on the monitors where the image is correct, you'd expect when I choose the current image the apply button would remain greyed out. It does not, it pops active even though the image I chose matched the one on the monitor already. Go figure. I can reset the background on each monitor, and it will remain until the next poweroff/reboot. Then, at least 2 monitors will be black. Which two seems to vary.

Latest jammy, no pending updates as of 12/23/22.

I'd say there's a 99% chance this is fixed with the big multiscreen refactor for the upcoming Plasma 5.27. Please feel free to re-open the bug report if you find that it still happens after you upgrade to that version. Thanks!
