hi, kdenlive already is very helpful and cautious about kdenlive versions... so, when opening a project with a version newer than what it was last edited with, a bakcup file is being created... BUT instead of being careful, it could elevate to even smart :) I mean, in project settings the kdenlive version could be set... like "18.1"... so, when the project is being opened in a newer version, not ooly the fact that it is newer could be acknowledged... after "trying" to edit the project in the newer version, the user could (when saving it, and also when closing it) be asked to choose whether to MIGRATE the project to a new kdenlive version... or stick to the the original version... // what I do is, I have a "my_apps" folder in my home dir... in which I keep the app images.. KDENLIVE has a folder in it... and I keep several versions there... and in the project directory I have a 00_version_notes.txt in which I record the version, for example, 18.12.1 and I know that this is immensely GREAT advantage of a FREE, community developed application... cause we can have several versions... and our projects could be safely accessed even years later.. in contrast to this, for example, all my projects that I once had using "premiere pro" I purged.. cause I don't don't have that application anymore.. and I don't want to have it, either :) nor do I want to have a windows installation anywhere on my SSDs... for some time, I kept my Sony Vegas Pro projects... also kept a windows installation for that purpose... and never ever updated the vegas pro... but now I don't have any of that shit :) :) IN ANY CASE: when it's your personal / art project... you'll want to access it even years later... for sure... and kdenlive makes this perfectly possible... already... my above suggestion is just the improved version of what already exists... - - - thank you for developing kdenlive, the best PRO video editor - - -
I think this is difficult to achieve as it would mean that we maintain Kdenlive project file type versions. In other words when you create a video in the latest Kdenlive version and you save the project, Kdenlive is asking you if you like to store it in an older version. That implies that some new functions you have used are removed in the project file. On the other hand, we suggest to stay with the same Kdenlive version while you edit a project. So in your case I would do the following: add in the project file the Kdenlive version like “this is my project_24.08.2.kdenlive”. If you ever have to edit this project again you can download from the https://download.kde.org/Attic/kdenlive/ either the AppImage (Linux) or the Standalone version (Windows) and edit that project without installing Kdenlive again. Would that be a solution instead of project file versions?
