(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***) Package: kmail Version: 1.4 (using KDE 3.0.0 ) Severity: normal Installed from: SuSE Compiler: gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (SuSE) OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.18-64GB-SMP OS/Compiler notes: Ocassionally after a few uses (sometimes weeks sometimes days...) when I log into Kmail ALL of my settings are lost..My Identities are gone My Network setup is gone and my filters are gone...My messages and folders remain in tact...just my settings disappear. I don't kill my machine and have always closed out of all applicatios correctly...and I'm not getting any error messages from KDE other than some generic messages about an unknown K-application crashing..no memory locations..just when I close X I see that KDE is complaining that something crashed. I expected this to be KDE server applets since I use startx so I can see those messages when I log out. It happens more frequently when I am using KDM at runlevel 5 instead of starting X from the command line....but the errors I see on the console for some reason don't get teed into the logfiles...(at least I haven't been able to locate them in any of my logfiles..) Is there a way for me to back up those settings until a fix occurs? (Rather than having to reenter them every time this happens...I have something like 20 mail accounts and 24 identities...(some are mail accounts forwarded to another mail account..) and about 10 or so filters...aside from sorting mail by account...(sorting mailing lists then a generic spam filter...I use REGEX matching on alot of my filters...) I don't think I had this problem before I started using REGEX...I'm not sure though... I'm only averageing 20 messages a day and am under a total of 4000 messages in my mail boxes. (Somewhere in the neighbor hood of 3600 messages...) I also am using xcin..but rarely use it..but it is always running..and am wondering if this may cause any issues... I'm sorry I don't know how to specifically force the error to happen as its only happened about 10 times and it happens so infrequently..like I said usually several weeks go by.. Are you probably using ReiserFS? I ask because if your computer crashes then files might get corrupted when you use (an older?) ReiserFS. ReiserFS. > Yes....It is the default with SuSE 8.0...Funny..they haven't released any= =20 announcements about that issue..but obviously they have the bug still in=20 their kernels as I have lost my man pages to this bug..Thanks for the=20 info..one I didn't know... I'll try backing up that file...it seems unused files don't get touched by = the=20 bug..if they are in unused directories...

As this is no KMail bug I close your report. BTW you should use ext3 or xfs instead of ReiserFS. So far I didn't have any problems with xfs and as ext3 is based on ext2 it should also be pretty safe. Nevertheless regular backups are a must.
