Description Harry Coin 2021-10-06 13:35:44 UTC
SUMMARY
The spectacle app disappears from the screen as if it was never run just after the 'take a new screenshot' button is pressed, and 'rectangular region' was the mode. Then, when the spectacle app is re-launched, the screen goes into the mode of choosing a region (the app box itself does not appear). After a region is chosen normally, the menu box appears and operations are typical.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Launch the app, specify a rectangular region. Choose take a screenshot
2. See the app disappear as if it was never launched at all. Totally normal appearance.
3. Launch the app again, the screen goes into 'select rectangle' mode and when selected normal spectacle ops continue.

OBSERVED RESULT
As above. The only difference I can think of is I have a multimonitor setup.

can you run Spectacle on the command line (enter `spectacle` in a terminal window) to see if any interesting output is printed when it unexpectedly closes?

Sometimes the dialog appears, sometimes not. From the command line, it always hangs. From the launcher, the second run allows taking a screenshot.

Strange. Thanks for the info.

Hi,

I'm finding the same issue on Mageia 8 as detailed here:

https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30632

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Plasma desktop on a latest gen Intel i5.

I use it on no delay and am taking a rectangular region.

If I start from konsole, I get no messages at all on the console window. The spectacle window disappears and the only way to get to back is CTL-C to shut down the running program. If I then relaunch I'm back into the spectacle window and clicking "Take A New Screenshot" makes the window disappear again.

If I run:

spectacle &

It closes down, but opening a second instance of spectacle from the command line
enables me to take a screenshot.

At this point, every time I re-run spectacle from the command line it immediately takes a new screenshot and clicking on the Take A New Screenshot button closes it down.

If I do this after clicking on the button:

[robertw@localhost ~]$ ps -ef | grep spectacle
robertw 13660 12772 2 10:26 pts/5 00:00:01 spectacle
robertw 13789 12772 0 10:27 pts/5 00:00:00 grep --color spectacle

You can see there is one instance of Spectacle running, but nothing is in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

I have a similar problem on Manjaro i3 (v 22.1.0). The first invocation of spectacle disappears when the rectangle selection tool is selected and take a screenshot button is pressed but relaunching spectacle and trying again works! I too have multiple monitors (3 to be precise).

Harry, is the issue still happening in Spectacle 23.04?
