Description Oswald Buddenhagen 2002-06-23 08:47:58 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kwin
Severity: wishlist

there should be an option to disable the window list popup and instead
direcly focus the windows when switching them with alt-tab.
this is a quite useful feature when you usually have many windows open
which all look the same to the window manager (terminals for example).

Use CDE Alt-Tab style (see the config panel)

cde mode does not provide an lru. so this bug is _not_ done.

a patch "Temporarily raise windows while alt-tabbing" has been posted by Martin
Blix Grydeland today. here are my thoughts wrt his patch:

there is a technical problem with this checkbox: it applies only to KDE mode, so it
should be at least disabled when CDE mode is selected. anyway, this points out
that this possibly should be a 3rd tabbing mode instead of an option to an existing
one. btw, the mode names are inconsequent: if "CDE" is used to describe one
mode, the other one should be called "MS Windows". so probably the best would
be naming the modes "Instant switch to next window (CDE)", "Popup LRU list +
Switch when finished (MS Windows)" and "Popup LRU list + Instant raise". Oh, that
reminds me, that some might want a mode "Instant switch with LRU (WindowMaker)".
maybe, reorganize it totally: a radio group "When window is selected" {"Raise
window", "Show popup", "Both"} and a checkbox "Use LRU". the combinations to
achieve the "classic behaviours" would be pointed out in the tooltip, but i don't
think anybody really wants to disable the LRU anyway.

YES the "KDE" and "CDE" labels are rather non-informative for most people... i wanted the "Instant switch to next window (CDE)" but didnt even understand it existed at first because "CDE"-mode means nothing to me. Mr Buddenhagen is on the right track with "Instant switch to next window" and "Popup LRU List" but LRU also sounds very cryptic :-/ Maybe "Popup Window List"?
