Description sramey40 2021-09-09 06:20:36 UTC
SUMMARY
The keyboard layout "widget" (I guess, it's the icon on the "taskbar" at the bottom right that shows the current keyboard layout) will cease to work, or completely disappear directly after plugging in my USB webcam. (ONN webcam with ring light, from Walmart, very common).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Set two keyboard layouts that can be swapped back and forth, for me it's US English and US Workman
2. Plug in USB Webcam
3. Keyboard Layout change widget no longer works or disappears

OBSERVED RESULT
Keyboard Layout change widget no longer works or disappears

EXPECTED RESULT
Keyboard Layout change widget should continue to function as normal.

Linux/KDE Plasma:
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version: 5.22.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.85.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Kernel Version: 5.13.12-arch1-1 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11

I'm updating to Plasma 5.22.5 now, and I'll test it again when it's done.
Comment 1 sramey40 2021-09-09 06:26:48 UTC
I just tested it with Plasma 5.22.5, and it still does the same thing. Also, I forgot to say that it can be fixed temporarily (until you plug in the webcam again) if you open settings, and go to the keyboard layout section, move the layout positions up and down (or anything that makes a change) and click "apply". After clicking "apply" it starts working as expected again.

Oh, anther thing I forgot. This also happens on my laptop. Same OS, and most everything is the same software wise, but the hardware is much older. Still same exact behaviour.

Could you test on Wayland?

That's weird...

I'm really not sure how to even begin to use Wayland. I can give it a try though, if you can point me in the direction I need to go to test it.

There should be Wayland session variant in your Login Screen (SDDM or whatever)

Sorry, I forgot to reply, but there wasn't a Wayland option in SDDM, and I couldn't figure out how to get Wayland working. I'm using EndeavorOS if that helps.

Also, I got an old Microsoft USB webcam (I think it's an HD4000), and it does not have this issue. I can plug it in and replug it, and the keyboard layout issue never happens. So it's specific to the Onn Ringlight Webcam.

Oh, really? Did you try to ask EndeavorOS folks maybe? It seems distro-specific (but I'm not sure).

Can we ask you to please check if this is still an issue with either Plasma 5.27 (the current LTS version) or Plasma 6.0 (to be released in one week)? Thanks a lot!
