Description Aaron Williams 2021-09-06 05:14:11 UTC
SUMMARY
After some time all applications and devices disappear from the volume control even though sound still works in applications such as Google Chrome. When this happens, there is no way for me to use the volume control in software. Note that I have several audio devices, the built-in audio on my motherboard, HDMI audio in a couple of monitors, and an external USB audio device, which is my primary audio source.

The icon shows a mute button when this happens.

If I select configure audio devices, no devices are shown. If, however, I go to the audio devices in system settings then all audio devices are shown.

Note that pulse audio IS running and audio is also working in KDE apps, i.e. the system bell in a console.

Also of note is that when this happens the keyboard volume control also stops working.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Log in to KDE desktop
2. Do some work
3. Volume icon will at some point go mute and audio can no longer be controlled by it.

OBSERVED RESULT
Icon suddenly shows mute and stops working/

EXPECTED RESULT
I expect the applications and the volume control to remain useable.

That's odd. Are you using PulseAudio or PipeWire? DOes it work to change the volume using global shortcuts or keys on your keyboard?

Is this still a problem?
