SUMMARY In KF 5.83.0, the digital clock plasmoid does not have any horizontal padding, such that it doesn't look good in vertical panels. With previous versions it was depending on the size of the panel and one could find sizes that have enough padding, but in KF 5.83.0 / Plasma 5.21.5 the font seems always to fit the available space without padding. I can no longer reproduce with current git master (AKA Plasma 5.23 and Frameworks 5.86). The panel itself has a small margin on the end of it that prevents this from happening. Can you try Plasma 5.22 and see if it is still happening for you? If it is, can you share your panel settings?
I think don't like to install a git/nightly version on this system, but maybe I can test when it lands in Debian sid. Was the padding added or should it be in 5.21.x and just doesn't work (on my system)?
To avoid misunderstandings, as you changed the title: My problem is that the vertical panel at the left side of the screen has no horizontal padding. The ends (top and bottom) seem to have some padding, but the edge of the panel has no padding. This looks good for the icons-only taskbar, but rather ugly for the digital clock.
Right. The panel is supposed to be adding this padding itself. For me it does; evidently for you, it does not. Have you customized anything about your panel? Or are you using a non-default Plasma theme?
I am Using the Aya theme, but with Breeze it looks the same, except there is a shadow right of the panel (outside). Oxygen and a few other themes don't have padding either. This is a regression from the previous Debian bullseye version (I think 5.20.x), but may have happended there for certain panel sizes. With 5.21.5 (Debian bookworm / testing) it happens for all panel sizes.
Can you send a screenshot of the whole screen?
Created attachment 141186 [details] Screenshot of a screen with a vertical panel with a digital clock Here is a minimal example: Add an empty panel to a workspace, drag it to the left and add a digital clock. Result: The clock does not have padding and looks ugly. The bold font touches the panel edge, the non-bold font in this screenshot has a tiny distance to the edge, but is still almost touching the edge.
Ah, I missed that this was always about vertical panels. That's been fixed in Plasma 5.22 already with https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-desktop/-/merge_requests/318.
Copying the file into my installation I can confirm that it works for me.
