To reproduce:
  - connect laptop to external monitor via HDMI
  - close laptop so that only the external monitor is active
  - attempt to "Lock Screen"

Result:
  - instead of seeing a prompt to unlock, I see a prompt to login
  - processes running in the locked session appear to have been killed

This problem occured under X11. I am using Wayland now, but want to submit this report before risking another crash.
I also tried to use slock from suckless-utils under Wayland. This also returned me to the login screen, but didn't crash the session -- I could reactivate it using loginctl.

The crash can be reproduced every time.
