Description LornaI 2021-08-26 08:47:10 UTC
SUMMARY
Project Render no longer functioning. Hangs at "Waiting"

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Create a new project & import a clip on VOB format
2. Drag the clip to the project bar.
3. Without making any other changes, attempt to render the project as an MP4 using the standard profile.

OBSERVED RESULT
The Rendering popup hangs at Waiting. Selecting Start Job has no effect.

EXPECTED RESULT
The project should be converted to an MP4 and stored in the folder shown in the Rendering popup.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Removing and reinstalling Kdenlive has no effect. MLT version 7.0.0.
Comment 1 LornaI 2021-08-26 08:57:01 UTC
Started render process: /snap/kdenlive/26/usr/bin/melt -progress /tmp/kdenlive-OljHqw.mlt out=4642
/snap/kdenlive/26/usr/bin/melt: error while loading shared libraries: libmlt.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directoryRendering of /home/lorna/Videos/untitled.mp4 aborted, resulting video will probably be corrupted.

Hello,
Your log extract shows you are using melt from snap package, and this melt binary looks for MLT6 which can't be found.
Can you check that Kdenlive 21.08 from PPA/AppImage/Flatpak does work for you, re-check cleaning your snaps, and eventually report to snap packager? (I believe it is Jonathan)
Comment 3 Jonathan Riddell 2021-08-26 13:38:38 UTC
You are using revision 26. The current revision is 38. When I have revision 38 melt is from mlt 7. `snap list kdenlive` shows which rev you have installed.
Comment 4 LornaI 2021-08-26 14:50:32 UTC
I used purge from terminal to remove kdenlive completely and autoremove to cleanup, then reinstalled from repository ppa:kdenlive via terminal. This is the rseult of snap list now:

Name Version Rev Tracking Publisher Notes
kdenlive 21.08.0 38 latest/stable kdeβœ“ -

I have tried to render my file again from the new install and it does seem to have rendered the file now, but the Rendering popup job queue is still showing Waiting!

Are there some files or folders that the purge command is not removing? If so, which ones? I don't want to start manually deleting files or folders without understanding what they do.
Comment 5 Vincent PINON 2021-08-26 14:55:41 UTC
purge, autoremove and ppa are related to APT package management (core distro).
your problem was due to clash with SNAP package ("sandbox" overlay).
use snap command to manage these packages (or the UI you like)...
Comment 6 LornaI 2021-08-26 15:38:22 UTC
OK, so I've removed kdenlive via sudo snap remove, then reinstalled using sudo snap install. Same result as last time. The file render completes but the UI popup sticks at Waiting. Render finished several minutes ago, so it's unlikely to be just a lag in the cleanup routines.
During the render it created log file, contents: Started render process: /snap/kdenlive/39/usr/bin/melt-7 -progress /tmp/kdenlive-xDYnbG.mlt out=6985
This file has now been moved or deleted.
kdenlive and snap-store in home/snap contain folders but these are all empty.

I am unsure as to what further info you need me to provide. Having uninstalled and reinstalled the application twice now via snap, the project does now render but the UI popup within the application still sticks at 'waiting' and it is impossible to submit any further jobs without manually removing the job and restarting the application.

This is obviously less serious than not rendering at all, but it is still a bug, in my opinion.

If you want me to provide logs, please tell me what logs you want, and where to find them. I am an educated user, not a programmer.

In the meantime, 21.08.1 was released.
Also, please check if this is a snap packaging problem by trying either AppImage or Flatpak (PPA lacks few effects but can do the job).
And the rendering feedback goes through DBus system, I don't know if snap controls some permissions like flatpak that can limit DBus access for example?

OK, as explained before, I am an 'educated user', not a programmer, so when you say "please check if this is a snap packaging problem by trying either AppImage or Flatpak" you need to be more precise. Are you asking me to uninstall and reinstall Kdenlive from a different distro?
