Seems to work here, i.e. pressing Ctrl+Tab goes to the next tab on the right and Ctrl+Shift+Tab goes the other way around.

Pressing Ctrl-Tab switches be to previous tab, not to the righter once. Pressing Ctrl-Shift-Tab switches me to some other tab in a way I cannot explain

Hello,

this is working as designed. Ctrl + Tab moves to the Last Used tab (+ Shift to reverse the order).
What you are looking for is Shift + arrow left/right if you just want to move positionally, independently from recency of use.
You can also Ctrl + Alt + I in pretty much any KDE app to see the menu entries for that app with their associated keyboard shortcuts, if any, and it will confirm this.

Closing.
