example of new panel layout

SUMMARY
When an external monitor is attached the 'screen configuration' widget appears and lets the user choose among some predefined layouts: external monitor, internal, duplicate, extend to left, extend to right. Often the external monitor is located above or (less often) below the primary one. Thus 'extend above' and 'extend below' options could be very helpful. See attached example image.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. connect external monitor
2. press 'screen configuration' widget

OBSERVED RESULT
no option to extend above or below

EXPECTED RESULT
direct option to extend above or below

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS

I second this request. I use my laptop in this configuration all the time and would love not to have to drag screens every time I plug in a new monitor.

Hi Nate, thanks for the prompt reply. I know how it works, indeed as you can see, the "bug" was opened ~10 months ago, I just wrote to understand if it will be taken into consideration soon or later.

Best,
Roberto.

This is marked as a wishlist, which means it's automatically lower priority than a bug report since technically nothing has gone wrong. You'll just have to be patient, I'm afraid, and wait for someone with technical expertise and interest to implement the requested feature.

This OSD always meant to be just a few common actions. Duplicating every possible option defeats the point.

How often do you plug in a new monitor?
Comment 8 K Freed 2022-04-08 21:05:31 UTC
Personally every week or so as there are a lot of monitors in public and at my job that I may need to pulling into for presentations or just to get work done.

That's not necessarily the point. In my case I mainly use the external monitor but I switch on the laptop screen when I'm video conferencing, because the camera is on the laptop and because it's useful to have two screens in that case. At the end of the conference I switch off the laptop screen. The only way to presently do such on/off switch is by systemsettings, while a direct button in the widget would definitely be a smarter way.
