Description Loren Dias 2021-06-15 06:22:33 UTC
Seeing as how beloved IRC server Freenode of 20 years dropped all channels and users today including #krita by switching to a new server software

Since moving to a new channel is necessary, I request that Matrix be considered as some channels are moving to Matrix & it's much easier for users to use and has advanced features built in like.

I request that since a new channel is necessary - the replacement consider Matrix as it would be easier to reach a wider audience since Matrix is much easier to use for new users than IRC which requires so many text commands & tech know-how.

There already is a channel for #krita on matrix.org with several dozen users by @shadowrun:matrix.org It shouldn't be too hard to get admin.

Matrix has a variety of apps for different users preferred chat styles -- https://matrix.org/clients/

As Matrix is a open network it's entirely possible for Krita or KDE to host their own Matrix Synapse server, eg: https://hub.docker.com/r/matrixdotorg/synapse/ if they were interested in doing so.

Sorry, this is not a topic that is suitable for a bug report. We're also not going to do any hosting apart from KDE. There are already ways of connecting to krita's libera.chat irc channel through matrix as well.

I did some more checking and it would seem KDE has a Matrix server? kde.org ( eg: https://matrix.org/blog/2019/02/20/welcome-to-matrix-kde )

More Info: https://community.kde.org/Matrix#Rooms

And I also discovered what appears to be #krita:kde.org aswell as ##krita-chat:kde.org which I assume are bridged to the Freenode server which eventually will be totally offline.

I suggest you have a internal discussion since those official rooms will go to nowhere in the future.

People are working on bridging matrix with libera; that sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. We don't maintain those bridges ourselves, though.

And, of course, we've had plenty of discussion about this already, both within the krita community and within the larger kde community.

1. We already have a Matrix room at #krita:kde.org, which used to be bridged to #krita on freenode, but due to various bugs it is not bridged properly at the moment, and
2. it doesn't matter anyway since we (Krita devs) already left freenode.
3. KDE has been working hard with Matrix and libera.chat staff to move the channels bridged to freenode to migrate over to libera.chat.
4. While the Matrix room will be bridged to the libera.chat IRC channel in the near future, the majority of the devs are still accessing it primarily via IRC, and this is not going to change any time soon.

You are free to join the chat, but there really isn't much for us to discuss on this issue, as we had pretty much decided on what to do already. You can check the kimageshop and kde-community mailing lists for some related info. Thanks for your concern.
