SUMMARY 1. See this screenshot with the other two types of graphs next to the bar graph, it is the only one that does not have a background for the area that is not being consumed. https://i.imgur.com/v3Rg8RW.png 2. The background color of the pie chart (the second) is different from the horizontal bar chart (the first). The contrast for panels using the dark breeze theme is better with the background color of the first widget, so others should also use it. According to kcolorpicker, it's #4b4f52(?) SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Operating System: Arch Linux KDE Plasma Version: 5.21.90 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.82.0 Qt Version: 5.15.2 Graphics Platform: X11
The pie chart has a background to indicate its full range, which is hard to guess without background. In the case of bar and line charts, the range is easier to guess. The horizontal bars style is special since it uses progress bars for display and only colours the progress part, the rest is done by the progress bar. That said, it might be an idea to implement background color selection for at least pie and bar charts.

Now I realize that it looks better on a horizontal panel. The range is indicated by the thickness of the panel. Compare to https://bugsfiles.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=139269. Why not allow to rotate horizontal and vertical bar display styles, and call them thin and thick bar chart?
Bar charts now have a background. We can add an option for background colour
