Description Sam Tuke 2021-05-15 15:44:28 UTC
SUMMARY
My 5 year old smartphone has better automatic colour correction than Digikam's "Color auto-correction" tool.
To avoid me having to send all my photos to smartphone and then back to Digikam, please either ship a more advanced colour correction tool, or add support for remote services or premium plugins (if necessary) which can provide this.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Apply "Color auto-correction" to some photos
2. Notice poor quality results in comparison to alternative tools

OBSERVED RESULT
Colour levels, vibrancy, etc are typically worse after Color auto-correction than before-hand, and results are certainly poorer than those of recent flagship smartphone software.

EXPECTED RESULT
Results are comparable to at least older smartphone software.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Digikam is awesome -- thanks for all your work ❤️

Well, a image is worth a thousand words. How about if we can get an idea of the color correction of your top smartphone. So a sample image in the original and one edited with your top smartphone?

FYI the phone app I'm using as reference is Samsung Photo Editor, which says of its colour correction feature: "Auto adjust will analyze the photo and enhance it with tone corrections like contrast, saturation and brightness".

That's just one example photo most readily at hand; hopefully works as an illustration.

Well, in addition to the automatic color correction, the Samsung image editor has simply increased the colors. Stronger colors perceive a lot as "better". If we did this automatically, we will get some negative feedback from photographers. Of course we can add this mode as well. By the way, you can achieve it relatively easily with digiKam, carry out an automatic exposure correction. Then apply the vivid effect from the color effect with a strength of 5-8. The image looks almost identical to the Samsung image.

I agree with Maik,

The smartphone application colors correction is very agressive. This is not the goal to Autocolors correction tool in digiKam

With Batch Queue Manager, you can achieve exactly the same multicorrection to the image to boost colors as you smartphone, as with color effect plugin or white Balance plugin.

Best regards
