Thanks for your report! I am sorry about your lost work, but I am not sure this is a issue of Kdenlive. It sounds more like an issue with your OS or any other application or as if you saved the project to a temporary location like /tmp. After you closed Kdenlive, the application should not longer be alive and have any impact on *.kdenlive files (maybe check this with your Taskmanager / Systemmonitor?)

If you have any further hints it might helps to find the root cause of this problem. If you think this is not related to kdenlive please close this report.

Thank you Julius for your prompt reply. By way of further info on this problem I can report the following.

My OS is Ubuntu 20.04.

Within kdenlive, with a blank project, if I click Project / Settings, I see that the "Project folder to store proxy clips, thumbnails, previews" is by default set to

"/home/graham/snap/kdenlive/common/.cache/kdenlive"

If I close that, and on the Settings menu click "Configure kdenlive", on the Project Defaults tab next to "Custom project folder" I see "/home/graham/Videos", which is currently NOT selected.

Given the above, it seems that my projects are ACTUALLY being saved in folders under

"/run/user/1000/doc/",

with a copy apparently also being saved in folders under

"/run/user/1000/doc/by-app/snap.kdenlive/".

Some of the folders under these locations are empty, some contain a project file.

Does any of the above shed light on this issue?

Thanks again for your help. Best regards,

Graham.

Yes, I think this helps at least a little :-)

First of all: to avoid such problems you should make sure to use other "proper" places e.g. inside your home dir.

However it seems you are using the Snap and the default path is not very good and should be changed if possible… The Snap is not very well maintained by the Kdenlive team (flatpak and appimage are currently better maintained), but Jonathan Riddell updated it recently and I asked him for help: https://invent.kde.org/neon/forks/kdenlive/-/issues/1

Many thanks Julius. That's given me some useful pointers on how to fix
this problem. I'll mark as solved / closed shortly. Have a good weekend.

Best regards,

Graham.

Thanks, I'll ask the Snap devs to better understand how this works and get back to you
