SUMMARY
In an X11 session, clicking an icon in the task manager or pressing Meta+number gives visual feedback that an application is starting.  Wayland seems to be missing this functionality.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Log into a Wayland session
2. Click an icon in the task manager

OBSERVED RESULT
No visual feedback that an application is starting.

EXPECTED RESULT
Visual feedback that an application is starting as in an X11 session.

Yep, there's currently no protocol that governs this. Luckily, one is under development and should be finalized soon.
