Created attachment 137247 [details] screenshot of DigiKam thumbnail view showing .FITS previews SUMMARY Maybe I'm missing some fundamental understanding of how DigiKam works, I am assuming because the ImageMagick plugin is loaded (Help -> Component Information) it should be able to read/write .FITS files? However, I can't get a preview image of a .FITS file, or open in editor. Both show checker board pattern, however the Colors tab shows histogram, which means(?) it sees something in the image file? I also had to add .FITS to Settings -> Views -> MIME types. (see attached screenshot) I also installed ImageMagick-7.0.11-5-Q16-HDRI-x64-dll to see it it would help. Windows: 10

I played with FITS on my Macbook pro using Chandra radio telescope samples : https://i.imgur.com/yCFUpFh.png https://i.imgur.com/Bn4kEWj.png https://i.imgur.com/3gZXuVi.png Image come from : https://www.chandra.harvard.edu/photo/openFITS/multiwavelength_data.html Image magick version used to compile under MacOS is 6.9.11, but under Windows version 7.X must not be a problem. I suspect a specificity with your FITS images not very well supported by Image Magick which render an alpha layer image. FITS is a very complex container with plenty of features. I suspect a change or bug in ImageMagick-7.x. Here under my native digiKam version I only see colored areas or pixel strips. Maik

First, I want to thank everyone for the Very quick action on this! Wow I can somewhat follow the discussion, but I'm not sure if the .FITS issue is fixed, although this Bug shows a Status of Resolved Fixed. I downloaded and installed the weekly snapshot, digiKam-7.3.0-20210401T190948-Win64.exe, but I'm still getting the same results: Thumb + Preview images show checkerboards while Colors tab show histograms. The Image Editor shows nothing (no checkerboard) however the cursor changes from an arrow to a plus sign + like is was moving from an empty area to the image. I was asked to include some FITS images. The first 2 are raw (uncalibrated) 16bit images from my 2 CCD cameras. Just installed digiKam-7.3.0-20210404T081036-Win64.exe. After rebuilding the thumbnails (which took a while for about 23,000 images (1.5 years of chasing asteroids, trying to figure out rotation periods) the thumbs and images are all there! Many, many thanks to all! Basil
