Description jbn 2021-02-18 23:51:28 UTC
SUMMARY
It's hard to know when Dolphin will compute folder sizes when sizing folders by size and not counting items. The search for folder sizes should start immediately but does not appear to.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Launch Dolphin normally and go to a folder where you have many files and folders of varying sizes.
2. Open Dolphin preferences and switch View Modes/Details/Folder size displays to "Size of contents, up to" and pick some depth level that will certainly contain everything in your folder and all subfolders of that folder.
Optional: Quit and relaunch Dolphin and then navigate to the same folder.

OBSERVED RESULT
Dolphin doesn't compute folder sizes for a while. I'm not sure how to cajole Dolphin into computing folder sizes. Refreshing the folder doesn't seem to get Dolphin to computer folder sizes. Getting the properties of a visible folder and refreshing its size from the properties window doesn't make the main Dolphin window in details view update with the just-computed size value.

EXPECTED RESULT
Dolphin should immediately begin computing folder sizes.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.20.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.78.0

OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 8 × AMD FX(tm)-8150 Eight-Core Processor

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I use folder size a lot so I'm interested in getting the size of a folder from Dolphin immediately.

It does *start* calculating immediately, but this can simply take some time to actually show results.
