SUMMARY STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. launch vlc 2. view a video 3. wait for 5 mn OBSERVED RESULT randomly one day you get a lock screen one day you don't. EXPECTED RESULT you don't get any lock screen SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Windows: macOS: Linux/KDE Plasma: (available in About System) KDE Plasma Version: 5.20.5 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.78.0 Qt Version: 5.15.2 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION kde apps 20.12.2 it's a very old bug, several years.
VLC needs to inhibit suspend. For me it does; evidently for you, it only sometimes do this. Can you do an experiment for me? 1. Open VLC with a video 2. Click on the "Battery and Brightness" aplet in the system tray 3. See if the header of the applet says "An application is preventing sleep and screen locking: VLC Media Player: playing some media. If it does say that, then the screen should not lock in 5 minutes. If it does not say that, then the screen should lock. Can you go see if that's the case? Thanks!
It's a desktop not a laptop. There is no "Battery and Brightness" applet in the system tray.
Ah ok, it's not showing up because you don't have any batteries, which is sort of a known bug. You can make it show up by either manually adding that widget to the desktop or something, or setting it to "Always show" in the System Tray config window.
If I view a video with VLC there is "An application is preventing sleep and screen locking: VLC Media Player: playing some media"
Ok great, that's what I would expect. So now, if you start watching the video, the screen will lock in 5 minutes?
(In reply to Nate Graham from comment #5) > Ok great, that's what I would expect. > > So now, if you start watching the video, the screen will lock in 5 minutes? Sometime yes.
It is the same problem viewing a YouTube video with Firefox.
All right, that's odd. The widget seems to know about the inhibition, but it's getting ignored sometimes. Moving to powerdevil. Thanks for your patience.
I forgot to say : Sometimes I don't get a black screen after 5 mn or a lock screen after 10 mn.
I wonder if this problem is not relative to a problem I submit to openSuse bugzilla. see https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1182562
Created attachment 136405 [details] MGS5 dbus-monitor log Hi all I'm having weird behavior with lock screen, as well. For me it's happening with Metal Gear Solid 5 under Proton, so to be fair it could be a problem in Proton. However, I'd like to mention it here as well just in case as these two cases are pretty similar. I'm also getting a notification that the screen lock is being inhibited by the game but the screen will lock after a while. Most of the time the screen locks for some reason but sometimes it doesn't. I ran dbus-monitor when running MGS5 and I've attached a part of the log here. Judging by the log if I understood correctly, sometimes when you call HasInhibition you get false, but sometimes you get true. I did the same for Dota 2 as well where there is no problem with inhibiting the screen locker. Will attach the log for Dota 2 as well. Hello i can almost reproduce the phenomenon. with VLC play a video then stop it. play another video then stop it play another video then you get a black screen with strong probability.
I had this problem once with some point release of Plasma 5.21 and VLC on Arch Linux. I do not know exact steps to reproduce though.
Is anyone able to reproduce this issue in Plasma 5.25 or later and the latest version of VLC?

Philip, by resetting the status back to REPORTED, does that mean you can reproduce the issue with Plasma 5.25 and the latest version of VLC?
