SUMMARY After I've opened the program I can't make a new layer or add a keyframe to the timeline without the program crashing. This is not exclusive to the animation I'm working on and affects other files as well.
Which version of Krita are you using? What OS are you on? Is it Windows? If yes, please attach Help -> Show Krita log for bug reports. You can also try to (without opening any files) go to Configure Krita -> Display and switch the Renderer and restart your Krita. If it's not Windows, please follow this instruction: https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_manual/sharing_krita_logs.html#crash-log-and-backtrace . You can try to disable the Canvas Graphics Acceleration in Configure Krita -> Display and see if that changes anything, too (restart your PC afterwards, too).

That means your graphics card drivers are a bit broken, you might want to update or reinstall them. But I'm glad it helped.
